Hi friend,

Now that we're in the month of Adar, it's almost Purim! This holiday is one of the most joyful days on the Jewish calendar. As chronicled in the Book of Esther, it commemorates the events of a foiled plot to massacre the Jews of ancient Persia. Today, Jews around the world celebrate with costumes, gifts of food, and lots of merriment.

To get you ready, here are some fun ways to explore the holiday and go deeper into the Purim story.

TEXT WITH A TWIST: The Emoji Megillah

Purim invites us to be silly, to dress up, to turn things upside-down. In that spirit, we created a digital version of the Book of Esther with its own type of costume: the Emoji Megillah! Read the full story of Purim with emojis as part of the text.

GO DEEPER: The Characters of Purim

Individual people play crucial roles in the Purim story. This guided learning collection from Sefaria's learning team considers the backstories, motivations, and unique characteristics of Purim's key figures. Want to explore more interpretations for yourself? Delve into Esther Rabbah, a commentary and retelling of the holiday's core text.

ADVANCED STUDY: Esther in the Talmud

There's a great stretch of midrash on the Book of Esther in tractate Megillah of the Babylonian Talmud. Study with additional commentary from Rashi and Tosefot in English via the right-hand resource panel.

As we get closer to Purim, I'd love to hear which holiday resources you found most exciting. You can reply to this email or send a note anytime to hello@sefaria.org.

About Sefaria

Our Prayer and hope: All the gates to the Har ha-Bait have to be opened for Jews and non-Jews seven days in the week 24 hours a day. The Jews need to have the freedom to go with Tefillin, Tallit and Torah Scroll up on the Mountain to serve Hashem. And do קידה ('Kidah' prostate, laying down, before Hashem) Everyone showing his/her respect for the Jewish and all other religions. But NOT for the words/deeds/sins spoken against any word of the Torah of Moshe Rabbeinu and the 'real' teachings of the Jewish Rabbis. The Jews must be the guardians of the Har ha-Bait.
