Jewish History

A noxious plot was brewing against the Jewish community of Saragossa, but they were completely unaware of the looming danger. They were spared, however, thanks to a handful of synagogues beadles who acted on a dream they all had. The resulting salvation on the 17th of Shevat was celebrated by Saragossan Jews, and dubbed "Purim Saragossa."

A Hebrew Megillah (scroll) was penned, describing the details of the miraculous story. To this day, this scroll is read in certain communities on Purim Saragossa.

Daily Thought

The wisdom of the Torah lives in the future, and from there it speaks to us.

There is no such thing as wisdom of the past. Torah’s wisdom preceded the world and is its destiny.

With each passing moment, the Torah becomes younger as we come closer to the time when it will break out of its womb and breathe the air of day. Then, only then, will we begin to truly fathom its meaning and depth.

Our ancient mothers and fathers, the sages, all those from whom we learn Torah wisdom—they are not guardians of the past. They are messengers of the future.
