It's written:1 ''You shall not use enchantments2 or observe times3'' What
is to use enchantments ? One who says ''because my bread fell from my
mouth'' or ''my stick fell from my hand'' or ''my son called me from
behind'' ''a raven called me'' ''a deer crossed my path'' ''a snake
is on my right'' ''a fox is on my left'' ''I will not go on that path
because I will not succeed'' and also those who hear a bird calling and
say ''this will happen and this will not'' ''it's good to do this and
bad to do this'' and also one who asked him for money and
says: ''please don't ask for the money back now'' ''it's the morning
and I won't start the day paying back a debt'' or it's out Shabbat or
Rosh Hodesh,4 and those who say ''you need to kill this
rooster because it crowed in the evening'' or ''this chicken because it
crowed like a rooster'' and all such similar things, are all
forbidden. One who does one of these things transgresses a negative
commandment. Some (authorities) say that if one did not say the
reason for why he was ordering to kill the chicken or the rooster, but
just said it, ''kill this chicken'' or ''this rooster'' it is allowed
to kill them, and this is the (accepted) custom.

4) This is an inauspicious (unlucky) time for me to repay the debt.

כתיב לא תנחשו ולא תעוננו כיצד הוא מנחש האומר הואיל ונפל פתי מפי או נפל מקלי מידי או בני קרא לי מאחורי עורב קרא לי צבי הפסיקני בדרך נחש מימיני שועל משמאלי לא אלך בדרך הזה כי לא אצליח וכן אלו ששומעים צפצוף העוף ואומרים יהיה כך ולא יהיה כך טוב לעשות דבר זה ורע לעשות דבר זה וכן מי שמבקשין ממנו מעות ואומר בבקשה ממך הניחני עתה שחרית הוא ולא אתחיל תחלת היום בפרעון או מוצאי שבת הוא או ראש חדש הוא וכן אלו שאומרים צריכין לשחוט תרנגול זה מפני שקרא ערבית או תרנגולת זאת מפני שקראה כמו תרנגול וכן כל כיוצא בדברים אלו הכל אסור והעושה דבר מדברים אלו עובר בלאו יש אומרים דאם אינו אומר הטעם למה הוא מצוה לשחוט את התרנגולת או התרנגול אלא אומר סתם שחטו תרנגולת זאת או תרנגול זה מותר לשחטם וכן הוא המנהג |

A
house, a baby and a wife, even though there is no divination there is a
sign, meaning that if one built a house or a baby was born to him or
he married a wife, whether he succeded afterwards three times or
not, it is a sign (omen) for him in the future, and he can say ''this
house was lucky for me etc.'' and also it is permitted to ask the child
what (Torah) verse he learnt and to rely on him to do some
action, which you could say is a little like prophecy. Some
(authorities) say that it is permitted to make for him a sign on
something that will happen in the future, like that made by Eliezer,
Abraham's servant, or Jonathan, Saul's son, and some (authorities)
forbid this. One who walks in sincerity and trusts in HaShem,
righteousness will surround him.

בית תינוק ואשה אף על פי שאין ניחוש יש סימן פירוש שאם בנה בית או נולד לו תינוק או נשא אשה אם הצליח אחר כך שלש פעמים או לא הוי סימן לו להבא ויכול לומר בית זה מצליח לי וכו' וכן מותר לשאול לתינוק איזה פסוק למד ולסמוך עליו לעשות מעשה דחשיב קצת כמו נבואה יש אומרים דמותר לעשות לו סימן בדבר שיבא לעתיד כמו שעשה אליעזר עבד אברהם או יהונתן בן שאול ויש אוסרין וההולך בתום ובוטח בה' חסד יסובבנו |

What is to observe times ? someone who gives times, who says as a prediction1 a
particular day is good, a particular day is bad, a particular day is
suitable for carrying out some particular work, a particular year or a
particular month is bad for a particular activity. The custom of not
marrying except on a full moon, is not in the category of divination or
soothsaying, for this is not done except for a good sign, like the
way they annoint kings in a spring as a sign that the reign will
continue, also they take for a good sign that the moon is waxing. In
any event one shouldn't delay the wedding for this, and especially one
shouldn't make the ceremony, when the woman is menstruating, for this
reason. It is customary to start learning on the new moon, and those
who have the custom of not starting on Monday or Wednesday, some allow
this also.

Also
said our sages, may their memory be for a blessing, what is
soothsaying, one who holds the eyes, meaning that he pretends to hold
the eyes of a person and closes them,1 that he covers
them, that it seems to them he seems to do wonderful and supernatural
things, and really does nothing except by sleight of hand. By trickery
he fools them, and the entertainers who do these kinds of acts at
weddings transgress a negative commandment, and the one told to do
these acts transgresses ''and before the blind''.2 Therefore
one who has the opportunity to object is obliged to object, and
certainly it is forbidden to look and watch them, but if a non-Jew is
performing (these acts) it is permitted to watch.
1) By sleight of hand and mis-direction he fools the person into
seeing what isn't true and not seeing what really is happening.

It
is forbidden to request anything from a witch unless one's life is in
danger, or if he became ill due to witchcraft or an evil spirit, it is
permitted to (seek) healing by a non-Jewish witch.1
1) This could be a male witch (wizard) or a female but the Rashbi
(Rabbi Shimeon Bar Yochai) says (Mechilta 22:17) that most witches are
female. |

Our Prayer and hope: All the gates to the Har haBayit have to be opened for Jews and non-Jews seven days in the week 24 hours a day. The Jews need to have the freedom to go with Tefillin, Tallit and Torah Scroll up on the Mountain to serve Hashem. And do קידה ('Kidah' prostate, laying down, before Hashem) Everyone showing his/her respect for the Jewish and all other religions. But NOT for the words/deeds/sins spoken against any word of the Torah of Moshe Rabbeinu and the 'real' teachings of the Jewish Rabbis. The Jews must be the guardians of the Har haBayit. |
