Sefaria Isaiah 42 - 43 Revised JPS
Sefaria Isaiah 42 - 43 Revised JPS
About This Text
Current Version
Current Translation
My chosen one, in whom I delight.
I have put My spirit upon him,
He shall teach the true way to the nations.
Or make his voice heard in the streets.
Or snuff out even a dim wick.
He shall bring forth the true way.
Till he has established the true way on earth;
And the coastlands shall await his teaching.
Who created the heavens and stretched them out,
Who spread out the earth and what it brings forth,
Who gave breath to the people upon it
And life to those who walk thereon:
And I have grasped you by the hand.
I created you, and appointed you
A covenant people, a light of nations —
Rescuing prisoners from confinement,
From the dungeon those who sit in darkness.
I will not yield My glory to another,
Nor My renown to idols.
And now I foretell new things,
Announce to you ere they sprout up.
Praise from the ends of the earth—
You who sail the sea and you creatures in it,
You coastlands and their inhabitants!
The villages where Kedar dwells;
Let Sela’s inhabitants shout,
Call out from the peaks of the mountains.
And tell God’s glory in the coastlands.
Whipping up rage like a fighter—
Yelling, roaring aloud,
Then charging upon the enemy.
Kept still and restrained Myself;
Now I will scream like a woman in labor,
I will pant and I will gasp.
Cause all their green to wither;
I will turn rivers into isles,
And dry the marshes up.
By a road they did not know,
And I will make them walk
By paths they never knew.
I will turn darkness before them to light,
Rough places into level ground.
These are the promises—
I will keep them without fail.
Shall be those who trust in an image,
Those who say to idols,
‘You are our gods!’”
You blind ones, look up and see!
So deaf as the messenger I send?
Who is so blind as the chosen one,
So blind as the servant of GOD ?
With ears open, he hears nothing.
That he may magnify and glorify the Teaching.
All of them are trapped in holes,
Imprisoned in dungeons.
They are given over to plunder, with none to rescue them;
To despoilment, with none to say “Give back!”
Attend and give heed from now on!
And Israel to plunderers?
Surely, GOD —against whom they sinned,
In whose ways they would not walk,
And whose Teaching they would not obey—
Anger, and the fury of war upon them.
It blazed upon them all about, but they heeded not;
It burned among them, but they gave it no thought.
Who created you, O Jacob,
Who formed you, O Israel:
Fear not, for I will redeem you;
I have singled you out by name,
You are Mine.
I will be with you;
Through streams,
They shall not overwhelm you.
When you walk through fire,
You shall not be scorched;
Through flame,
It shall not burn you.
The Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
I give Egypt as a ransom for you,
Cush and Saba in exchange for you.
And honored, and I love you,
I give people in exchange for you
And nations in your stead.
I will bring your folk from the East,
Will gather you out of the West;
And to the South, “Do not withhold!
Bring My sons from afar,
And My daughters from the end of the earth—
Whom I have created,
Formed, and made for My glory—
Blind though it has eyes
And deaf though it has ears.”
The peoples gather.
Who among them declared this,
Foretold to us the things that have happened?
Let them produce their witnesses and be vindicated,
That people, hearing them, may say, “It is true!”
—declares GOD —
My servant, whom I have chosen.
To the end that you may take thought,
And believe in Me,
And understand that I am the One:
Before Me no god was formed,
And after Me none shall exist—
Beside Me, none can grant triumph.
And I brought it to pass;
I announced it,
And no strange god was among you.
So you are My witnesses
—declares GOD —
And I am God.
None can deliver from My hand.
When I act, who can reverse it?
Your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
For your sake I send to Babylon;
I will bring down all [her] bars,
And the Chaldeans shall raise their voice in lamentation.
Your Sovereign, the Creator of Israel.
Who made a road through the sea
And a path through mighty waters,
And all the mighty host—
They lay down to rise no more,
They were extinguished, quenched like a wick:
Or ponder what happened of yore!
Even now it shall come to pass,
Suddenly you shall perceive it:
I will make a road through the wilderness
And rivers in the desert.
Jackals and ostriches,
For I provide water in the wilderness,
Rivers in the desert,
To give drink to My chosen people,
That they might declare My praise.
That you should be weary of Me, O Israel.
Nor honored Me with your sacrifices.
I have not burdened you with grain offerings,
Nor wearied you about frankincense.
Nor sated Me with the fat of your sacrifices.
Instead, you have burdened Me with your sins,
You have wearied Me with your iniquities.
Wipe your transgressions away
And remember your sins no more.
Let us join in argument,
Tell your version,
That you may be vindicated.
And your spokesmen transgressed against Me.
I abandoned Jacob to proscription
And Israel to mockery.

Five possessions did the Holy Blessed One, set aside as his own in this world, and these are they: The Torah, one possession; Heaven and earth, another possession; Abraham, another possession; Israel, another possession; The Temple, another possession. 1a) The Torah is one possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written, “The Lord possessed (usually translated as ‘created’) me at the beginning of his course, at the first of His works of old” (Proverbs 8:22). 2a) Heaven and earth, another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is said: “Thus said the Lord: The heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool; Where could you build a house for Me, What place could serve as My abode? (Isaiah 66:1) And it says: “How many are the things You have made, O Lord; You have made them all with wisdom; the earth is full of Your possessions” (Psalms 104:24). 3a) Abraham is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written: “He blessed him, saying, “Blessed by Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth” (Genesis 15:19). 4a) Israel is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written: “Till Your people cross over, O Lord, Till Your people whom You have possessed” (Exodus 15:16). And it says: “As to the holy and mighty ones that are in the land, my whole desire (possession) is in them” (Psalms 16:3). 5a) The Temple is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is said: “The sanctuary, O lord, which your hands have established” (Exodus 15:17”, And it says: “And He brought them to His holy realm, to the mountain, which His right hand had possessed” (Psalms 78:54).
I like to call out to all my Jewish friends:
Zechariah 8:23
23So said the Lord of Hosts: In those days, when ten men of all the languages of the nations shall take hold of the skirt of a Jewish man, saying, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you."
ten men: from the seventy nations. This equals seven hundred for each corner. For the four corners of the tallith there will be two thousand and eight hundred. | | עשרה אנשים: משבעים לשון הרי שבע מאות לכל כנף וכנף הרי לד' כנפי הטלית אלפים ושמונ' מאו': |
Please Judah if a righteous gentile tries ‘to grasp your ‘tsi-sit’ and say: "Let me go with you, for I have heard that God is with you." Open your heart for him/her and share all our Torah. The Torah of Moshe Rabbeinu as it is written and spared and is teaches in the Tanach and all scripture of Rabbinical Judaism………
