Sefaria Isaiah 49 Revised JPS
Sefaria Isaiah 49 Revised JPS
About This Text
Current Version
Current Translation
And give heed, O nations afar:
GOD appointed me before I was born,
Naming me while I was in my mother’s womb.
While I was hidden in the shadow of a divine hand,
So that I was like a polished arrow—
Concealed in God’s quiver.
Israel in whom I glory.”
I have spent my strength for empty breath.”
But my case rested with GOD,
My recompense was in the hands of my God.
The One who formed me in the womb to be of service—
To bring back Jacob
And restore Israel.
And I have been honored in the sight of GOD,
My God has been my strength.
“It is too little that you should be My servant
In that I raise up the tribes of Jacob
And restore the survivors of Israel:
I will also make you a light of nations,
That My salvation may reach the ends of the earth.”
The Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One,
To the despised one,
To the abhorred nations,
To the slave of rulers:
Kings shall see and stand up;
Nobles, and they shall prostrate themselves—
To the honor of GOD, who is faithful,
To the Holy One of Israel who chose you.
In an hour of favor I answer you,
And on a day of salvation I help you—
I created you and appointed you a covenant people —
Restoring the land,
Allotting anew the desolate holdings,
To those who are in darkness, “Show yourselves.”
They shall pasture along the roads,
On every bare height shall be their pasture.
Hot wind and sun shall not strike them;
For the One who loves them will lead them
And will guide them to springs of water.
And My highways shall be built up.
These from the north and the west,
And these from the land of Sinim.
Break into shouting, O hills!
For GOD has comforted this people,
And has taken back its afflicted ones in love.
“ GOD has forsaken me,
My Sovereign has forgotten me.”
Or disown the child of her womb?
Though she might forget,
I never could forget you.
On the palms of My hands,
Your walls are ever before Me.
Those who ravaged and ruined you shall leave you.
They are all assembled, are come to you!
As I live
—declares GOD —
You shall don them all like jewels,
Deck yourself with them like a bride.
And your land laid waste—
You shall soon be crowded with settlers,
While destroyers stay far from you.
Shall yet say in your hearing,
“The place is too crowded for me;
Make room for me to settle.”
“Who bore these for me
When I was bereaved and barren,
Exiled and disdained —
By whom, then, were these reared?
I was left all alone—
And where have these been?”
I will raise My hand to nations
And lift up My ensign to peoples;
And they shall bring your sons in their bosoms,
And carry your daughters on their backs.
Their queens shall serve you as nurses.
They shall bow to you, face to the ground,
And lick the dust of your feet.
And you shall know that I am GOD —
Those who trust in Me shall not be shamed.
Or captives retrieved from a victor?
Captives shall be taken from a warrior
And spoil shall be retrieved from a tyrant;
For I will contend with your adversaries,
And I will deliver your children.
They shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine.
And all humankind shall know
That I GOD am your Savior,
The Mighty One of Jacob, your Redeemer.

Five possessions did the Holy Blessed One, set aside as his own in this world, and these are they: The Torah, one possession; Heaven and earth, another possession; Abraham, another possession; Israel, another possession; The Temple, another possession. 1a) The Torah is one possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written, “The Lord possessed (usually translated as ‘created’) me at the beginning of his course, at the first of His works of old” (Proverbs 8:22). 2a) Heaven and earth, another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is said: “Thus said the Lord: The heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool; Where could you build a house for Me, What place could serve as My abode? (Isaiah 66:1) And it says: “How many are the things You have made, O Lord; You have made them all with wisdom; the earth is full of Your possessions” (Psalms 104:24). 3a) Abraham is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written: “He blessed him, saying, “Blessed by Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth” (Genesis 15:19). 4a) Israel is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written: “Till Your people cross over, O Lord, Till Your people whom You have possessed” (Exodus 15:16). And it says: “As to the holy and mighty ones that are in the land, my whole desire (possession) is in them” (Psalms 16:3). 5a) The Temple is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is said: “The sanctuary, O lord, which your hands have established” (Exodus 15:17”, And it says: “And He brought them to His holy realm, to the mountain, which His right hand had possessed” (Psalms 78:54).
I like to call out to all my Jewish friends:
Zechariah 8:23
23So said the Lord of Hosts: In those days, when ten men of all the languages of the nations shall take hold of the skirt of a Jewish man, saying, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you."
ten men: from the seventy nations. This equals seven hundred for each corner. For the four corners of the tallith there will be two thousand and eight hundred. | | עשרה אנשים: משבעים לשון הרי שבע מאות לכל כנף וכנף הרי לד' כנפי הטלית אלפים ושמונ' מאו': |
Please Judah if a righteous gentile tries ‘to grasp your ‘tsi-sit’ and say: "Let me go with you, for I have heard that God is with you." Open your heart for him/her and share all our Torah. The Torah of Moshe Rabbeinu as it is written and spared and is teaches in the Tanach and all scripture of Rabbinical Judaism………
