Maimonides – a Spy in the Brothel of the Philosophers
With the passing of R. Shimon Bar Yohai, the esoteric dimension of Torah went underground, leading the Sages of subsequent generations to convey their knowledge in riddles and parables. Even subsequent Kabbalistic texts were written enigmatically. Yet, within these texts lies a genuine esoteric tradition.
As if to prove his words, R. Gershon Henokh devotes the next eight chapters to a discussion of esoteric truths found in the writings of Maimonides, and shows how they correspond to teachings in the Zohar. His claim is that Maimonides was heir to a true (though perhaps partial) mystical tradition, and dressed it in the garments of Aristotelian philosophy for the sake of the intelligencia of his time, who were steeped in Greek and Arab medieval philosophy.
According to R. Gershon Henokh, those who imagine Maimonides to have been a strict rationalist and anti-mystic have only a superficial understanding of his philosophy; for Maimonides himself writes that he intentionally hid and scattered the truth piecemeal throughout his writings, and that one needs a comprehensive view of the texts in order to discern his true intentions – something that R. Gershon Henokh seeks to convey to the reader in the following chapters.

שבאמת שורש הקבלה הוא חקירה אלהית בכל הפרטים בשלימות, והיא הסולת הנקיה והברורה מנופה בשלש עשרה נפות, שהקבלה הוא מן השורש, ומן השורש ידע כל המסתעף ממנו. ובחקירה העיונית יש הרבה פסולת מרובה על האוכל, שהחקירה היא נבנית על ראיות והיקשים מן המוחש אל מה שלמעלה מן הטבע, וממה שאינו מוחש אינם משיגים ורוצים להגיע ולהשיג מן העלול אל העילה, ולכן על פי רוב הם משובשים. וכדאיתא בזה"ק (יתרו סט:) דבסגיאת תבנא אית חד גרעינא דחטין. אכן גם הקבלה השלימה, אם נכתבה בלשון המחקר, לא יספיק לשון המחקר לבאר די באור, והרוב יחסר שורש הכוונה, באפס לשון למודים להעטיף בו תוכן הכוונה, ויבא בארוכה לבאר כל פרט ופרט, אשר בלשון הקבלה די לזה מלה אחת או שתים, שהוא כולל כמה וכמה גליונות ומאמרים בלשון המחקר. וכגון כמה פרקים במורה נבוכים בהרחקת הגשמיות וביאור שיתופי שמות, שבמלה אחת ושתים שנזכר בזה"ק לשון, ההוא בזעיר אפין אתמר, כולל כל המאמרים ההם:

Truly, the source of Kabbalah is a complete inquiry into the nature of the Divine, in all its facets. It is a thoroughly refined study, like finely sifted flour. Kabbalah comes from the source of all, and if one has knowledge of the source, he can know of all that branches out from it. For the most part, in philosophy, the extraneous is prevalent over the essential. This is because philosophy uses empirical proofs and comparisons to reach conclusions on the nature of the transcendent. Yet philosophers cannot draw conclusions other than on what they perceive. Still, they want to follow the way back from the effect to the cause. Therefore, most philosophy is a muddle. It is written in the Zohar (Yitro, 69b), “In a lot of chaff you find one grain of wheat.” Indeed, when the true tradition of the hidden knowledge of the Torah is expressed in the language of philosophy, its language is at a loss to explain it with clarity. Most of such explanations lack the source of the intention simply because the language of philosophy is not sufficient to convey its content. Philosophy is verbose, using a great deal of explanation to convey what the Kabbalah does in a few words. This would include passages in the Guide to the Perplexed that dwell at great length to explain the doctrine of eschewing the physical or concerning the names of God, which the Zohar manages to explain in a few concise words.

להרמב"ם היה קבלה שלימה, ואף מתנגדיו ידעו מזה.

וכן מוכח מהספר מורה נבוכים שהיה לו קבלה. לא אבוא כאן לבאר אם היה לו קבלה שלימה בכל פרטיה, אכן זה ברור שרמז בכמה ענינים שהיה לו קבלה אמיתית. וכן גם רוב מתנגדיו ידעו מזה, אכן ירדו להציל כלפי שכתב הרמב"ם ז"ל (במכתביו) יאבדו אלף ואחד יבא לאמתת הכוונה, לכן ירדו להציל לבלתי נדח ממנו נדח:

It is evident from the Rambam’s work, the Guide for the Perplexed, that he had received a Kabbalistic tradition from the prophets and the sages of the Talmud. I will not explain here if his tradition was complete or partial, yet it is clear from how the Rambam hints at various matters that his tradition was authoritative. Most of his opponents were aware of this, and could not outright reject his philosophical writings, for he himself wrote (in his letters), “a thousand will be lost where one will come to the true meaning.” Because of this, many who opposed the Guide still studied it for the sake of that which they accepted.

מה שכתב הרמב"ם וכמה מחברים בלשון המחקר, והביאו דעת הפילוסופים, לא למען חקור דעת מציאותו ית' רק באו להורות הנבוכים. ואם לא היו מביאים דעת הפילוסופים לא היה דורש לספריהם.

ולדוגמא אציג פה איזה פרטים שיוכיחו שהיה לו קבלה אמיתית, ולאשר כתב ספרו בלשון המחקר והביא דעת הפילוסופים, וכן נהגו אחריו כמה מחברים, בעל ספר עקידת יצחק והר"י אברבנאל, לא למען חקור בחקירה לבא לדעת מציאות הש"י מתוך חקירתם, כי אמונתם בהש"י היה למעלה מכל חקירתם. ורק באו להורות הנבוכים בדעתם והוכיחו להביא חקירת דעת הפילוסופים. שבאם לא הביאו דעתם לא היה להם דורש לעיין בספריהם, כי אז היה חזון הדעת נסתם מאד, וכל דורש לחקור ולהבין בעניני אמונה וההשגחה וההשפעה נפנה לספרי החקירה, כדאיתא בשו"ת הרשב"א (סימן תיד) שהוכרח לאסור במנין לימוד החיצונות וכתב שם, שהיו סומכים אל אריסטו כסומך על הפלטר. ואם לא היו מביאים דעתם לא היה להם דורש ומבקש ומעיין בספריהם. אכן אחר שהביאו דבריהם והוכיחו בראיות לבטלם, אז דרשו ספריהם ונתבטלו אצל ישראל דעותיהם:

Below I will present several details in the writings of the Rambam which prove that he had received an authoritative tradition. The Rambam wrote the Guide in the language of philosophers, and quoted the opinion of the classical philosophers. Several sages after the Rambam, such as the Akeidat Yitzchak and Rav Yitzchak Abarbanel, followed suit. They did not do this in order to somehow arrive at a proof of the existence of God as a result of their philosophical analysis, for their faith in God was far more central to them than their discursive investigation. Their goal was only to instruct the perplexed in the proper understanding of the Torah, and they quoted the philosophers in order to serve this goal. If they had not included the opinions of the philosophers, then the intelligencia of their day would not have found their books sufficiently interesting to spend time reading. In their day, the vision of consciousness was greatly hidden. Anyone who wanted to investigate and understand matters of faith, spirituality, and providence, would turn to works of philosophy. This is noted in the Responsa of the RaShb”A (siman 414), who was compelled to make a legal decree forbidding the study of secular philosophy. There the RaShb”A tells us that the “searching” public would put their trust in Aristotle the way one trusts his local baker. Therefore, The Rambam and his spiritual descendants quoted the philosophers as a kind of “bait” to lure the reader in, only to disprove their theories and then enlighten them to the understanding of Torah.

מה שעוררו על המורה נבוכים ששגה, ואומרים שדעתו דאין השי"ת משגיח בפרטיות על כל דבר, הגיע להם, שלא באו לתוכן כוונתו.

אכן מצאנו בדבריהם קבלה אמיתית, כמו שראינו עוררים חמתם על ספר מורה נבוכים ששגה בענין השגחה, ותלו בו בוקי סריקי ואומרים שדעתו שאין הש"י משגיח בהשגחה פרטיית בכל דבר רק השגחה כללית. והגיע אליהם טעות זה בדעתו, מקוצר השגתם ומגאות, כשרואים במקום אחד ישמחו בחלקם שמצאו מקום להשיג ולרדוף. אכן לא שמו לב להמכתב שכתב הרמב"ם ז"ל לתלמידו ר' יוסף ש"ץ ב"ר יהודה אבן עקנין, שהספר הוא בענינים מפורדים ואין ידיעתם ממקום אחד, רק כשתעיין בכמה מקומות מפורדים ותצרפם אז תבין. וזה שראו בפרק ע"ג מראשון הקדמה ששית, שאומר שם בסתרו דעת האומרים שכל הבריאה וההנהגה שהעצם הוא קיים והמקרה בורא הקב"ה ומחדשה בכל רגע, וכן קצת המעתוזלה שאומרים שאין שום טבע קיים כללי, וסותר שם דיעות כאלו. ובאמת מצד הש"י הוא מחדש בכל יום תמיד מעשה בראשית. אבל מה שנתן הש"י להבריאה תפיסה והשגה בהבריאה חוק וזמן נתן להם שלא ישנו את תפקידם. שמצד הש"י שניהם אחד. טבע הקיים ומקרה המחודש, שרצונו על טבע הקיים הוא הוא רצונו על התחדשות שהכל גלוי לפניו:

Indeed we find an authoritative tradition in their words. We have seen how they are infuriated over the Guide as it has erred in matters of Divine providence. They claim his words are meaningless in that he does not believe that God watches over all details of creation, but rather has a general providence over the creation as a whole. The source of their erroneous understanding is their hasty reading of the Rambam. In their intellectual arrogance they would see one passage, and then smugly proclaimed it a focal point for their attack. Yet they took no notice of the letter that the Rambam wrote to his student Rav Yosef Shatz ben Rav Yehuda Ibn ‘Aqnin, where the Rambam states that the Guide is made up of several different matters, and can not be understood from a reading of just one of them. Only when you study a number of different passages can you then put them together and understand the meaning. We see this in chapter 73 of the first section of the Guide, sixth introduction, where he disproves the notion of those who say that throughout the entire creation and Divine governance thereof, that substance exists, and God continually creates, destroys, and recreates accidents. Similarly he confronts the belief of the Mu’tazilah that there is no natural existing force of any other agency (but that everything is being newly created at all times.). The Rambam disproves such assertions. Truly, from God’s point of view, He constantly renews the work of creation at all times. Yet concerning the ability God gave man to perceive and understand the creation, here He created definite laws and durations which are immutable. Yet from God’s point of view, both existing forces in nature and the constant renewal of accidents are actually one and the same. That is to say, God’s will for fixed natural laws and His will in the constant renewal of creation are all clearly revealed before Him.

Five possessions did the Holy Blessed One, set aside as his own in this world, and these are they: The Torah, one possession; Heaven and earth, another possession; Abraham, another possession; Israel, another possession; The Temple, another possession. 1a) The Torah is one possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written, “The Lord possessed (usually translated as ‘created’) me at the beginning of his course, at the first of His works of old” (Proverbs 8:22). 2a) Heaven and earth, another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is said: “Thus said the Lord: The heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool; Where could you build a house for Me, What place could serve as My abode? (Isaiah 66:1) And it says: “How many are the things You have made, O Lord; You have made them all with wisdom; the earth is full of Your possessions” (Psalms 104:24). 3a) Abraham is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written: “He blessed him, saying, “Blessed by Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth” (Genesis 15:19). 4a) Israel is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written: “Till Your people cross over, O Lord, Till Your people whom You have possessed” (Exodus 15:16). And it says: “As to the holy and mighty ones that are in the land, my whole desire (possession) is in them” (Psalms 16:3). 5a) The Temple is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is said: “The sanctuary, O lord, which your hands have established” (Exodus 15:17”, And it says: “And He brought them to His holy realm, to the mountain, which His right hand had possessed” (Psalms 78:54).

ten men: from the seventy nations. This equals seven hundred for each corner. For the four corners of the tallith there will be two thousand and eight hundred.		עשרה אנשים: משבעים לשון הרי שבע מאות לכל כנף וכנף הרי לד' כנפי הטלית אלפים ושמונ' מאו':

Please Judah if a righteous gentile tries ‘to grasp your ‘tsi-sit’ and say: "Let me go with you, for I have heard that God is with you." Open your heart for him/her and share all our Torah. The Torah of Moshe Rabbeinu as it is written and spared and is teaches in the Tanach and all scripture of Rabbinical Judaism………
