Halakhah

The Sefer HaChinukh (“Book of Education”) is an anonymous work written in 13th-century Spain that clearly details the 613 commandments and explains the reasons behind them. In his introduction, the author explains that he wrote the book to “awaken the hearts'' of his teenage son and his peers, hoping to foster in them a sense of connection to the commandments. For each commandment, the author cites a biblical source, addresses the philosophical underpinnings of the commandment, presents a brief overview of the details of its observance, and summarizes the commandment’s applicability. The work remains popular today, especially in educational settings.

שֶׁלֹּא נַאֲכִיל מִן הַפֶּסַח לְגֵר וְתוֹשָׁב – שֶׁלֹּא לְהַאֲכִיל מִבְּשַׂר הַפֶּסַח לְגֵר וּלְתוֹשָׁב, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: (שמות יב מה) תּוֹשָׁב וְשָׂכִיר לֹא יֹאכַל בּוֹ. וְהַתּוֹשָׁב הוּא אָדָם מִן הָאֻמּוֹת שֶׁקִּבֵּל עָלָיו שֶׁלֹּא לַעֲבֹד עֲבוֹדָה זָרָה וְאוֹכֵל נְבֵלוֹת. וְשָׂכִיר הוּא גֵּר שֶׁמָּל וְלֹא טָבַל, שֶׁכֵּן פֵּרְשׁוּ חֲכָמֵינוּ זַ"ל. (יבמות עא א).

That we not feed of the Pesach sacrifice to a stranger or a resident: To not give (allow) to eat from the meat of the Pesach sacrifice to a stranger or resident, as it is stated (Exodus 12:45), “The resident or wageworker shall not eat it.” And a “resident” is a man from the [other] nations who takes upon himself not to worship idolatry, but eats carcasses. And a “hired laborer” is a convert who has circumcised himself but not immersed [in a mikveh] — as so did our Sages, may their memory be blessed, explain (Yevamot 71a).

מִשָּׁרְשֵׁי מִצְוָה זוֹ. מָה שֶׁכָּתַבְנוּ בַּאֲחֵרוֹת לְזֵכֶר יְצִיאַת מִצְרַיִם. וּבַעֲבוּר שֶׁקָּרְבַּן זֶה לְזֵכֶר חֵרוּתֵנוּ וּבוֹאֵנוּ בִּבְרִית נֶאֱמָנָה עִם הַשֵּׁם יִתְבָּרַךְ, רָאוּי שֶׁלֹּא יֵהָנוּ בּוֹ רַק אוֹתָם שֶׁהִשְׁלִימוּ בָּאֱמוּנָה, וְהֵם יִשְׂרְאֵלִים גְּמוּרִים וְלֹא אֵלּוּ שֶׁעֲדַיִן לֹא בָּאוּ עִמָּנוּ בִּבְרִית שָׁלֵם. וְעִנְיַן הַרְחָקַת הֶעָרֵל מֵאֲכִילָתוֹ, גַּם כֵּן מִזֶּה הַשֹּׁרֶשׁ (שם).

From the roots of this commandment is that which we have written in others [about Pesach above] — to remember the exodus from Egypt. And because this sacrifice is to remember our freedom and our coming into the steadfast covenant with God, may He be blessed, it is fitting that only those that have completed the faith benefit from it — and those are complete Jews; not those that have not yet come together with us in the complete covenant. And the content of the distancing of the uncircumcised from its eating is also from this root (Yevamot 71a).

וְנוֹהֶגֶת בִּזְמַן הַבַּיִת בִּזְכָרִים וּנְקֵבוֹת. וְעוֹבֵר עָלֶיהָ וְהֶאֱכִיל לְאֵלּוּ עוֹבֵר עַל לָאו, וְאֵין לוֹקִין עָלָיו, שֶׁאֵין בּוֹ מַעֲשֶׂה.

And [it] is practiced at the time of the [Temple] by males and females. And one who transgresses it and gives these to eat [it], transgresses a negative commandment. But we do not administer lashes for it, as it does not have an act.

Five possessions did the Holy Blessed One, set aside as his own in this world, and these are they: The Torah, one possession; Heaven and earth, another possession; Abraham, another possession; Israel, another possession; The Temple, another possession. 1a) The Torah is one possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written, “The Lord possessed (usually translated as ‘created’) me at the beginning of his course, at the first of His works of old” (Proverbs 8:22). 2a) Heaven and earth, another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is said: “Thus said the Lord: The heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool; Where could you build a house for Me, What place could serve as My abode? (Isaiah 66:1) And it says: “How many are the things You have made, O Lord; You have made them all with wisdom; the earth is full of Your possessions” (Psalms 104:24). 3a) Abraham is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written: “He blessed him, saying, “Blessed by Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth” (Genesis 15:19). 4a) Israel is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is written: “Till Your people cross over, O Lord, Till Your people whom You have possessed” (Exodus 15:16). And it says: “As to the holy and mighty ones that are in the land, my whole desire (possession) is in them” (Psalms 16:3). 5a) The Temple is another possession. From where do we know this? Since it is said: “The sanctuary, O lord, which your hands have established” (Exodus 15:17”, And it says: “And He brought them to His holy realm, to the mountain, which His right hand had possessed” (Psalms 78:54).

23So said the Lord of Hosts: In those days, when ten men of all the languages of the nations shall take hold of the skirt of a Jewish man, saying, "Let us go with you, for we have heard that God is with you."		כגכֹּֽה־אָמַר֘ יְהֹוָ֣ה צְבָאוֹת֒ בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔מָּה אֲשֶׁ֚ר יַֽחֲזִ֙יקוּ֙ עֲשָׂרָ֣ה אֲנָשִׁ֔ים מִכֹּ֖ל לְשֹׁנ֣וֹת הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וְֽהֶחֱזִ֡יקוּ בִּכְנַף֩ אִ֨ישׁ יְהוּדִ֜י לֵאמֹ֗ר נֵֽלְכָה֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם כִּ֥י שָׁמַ֖עְנוּ אֱלֹהִ֥ים עִמָּכֶֽם:
ten men: from the seventy nations. This equals seven hundred for each corner. For the four corners of the tallith there will be two thousand and eight hundred.		עשרה אנשים: משבעים לשון הרי שבע מאות לכל כנף וכנף הרי לד' כנפי הטלית אלפים ושמונ' מאו':

Please Judah if a righteous gentile tries ‘to grasp your ‘tsi-sit’ and say: "Let me go with you, for I have heard that God is with you." Open your heart for him/her and share all our Torah. The Torah of Moshe Rabbeinu as it is written and spared and is teaches in the Tanach and all scripture of Rabbinical Judaism………
